NOVEMBER "FLY INTO HISTORY" PROGRAM Keystone Heights Airport, Florida (42J)
Liaison Aircraft - “Eyes in the Sky” Presentation by Bob Oehl
Guest L-Bird owners and reconnaissance pilots welcome!
Wings of Dreams L-4J Grasshopper on Display This aircraft’s markings are of the 12th Army Group, Third Army, 45th Unit, 35th Infantry Division, to which it was assigned.
More L-4s were in combat service than any other L-bird. The WWII missions included flying unarmed close-visual artillery support during battle. Relying on their experience and guts, L-4 pilots flew over every type of terrain and into every known weather condition.
Many field modifications were performed at the frontlines. During the Battle of the Bulge, one L-4 modified with three bazookas attacked and destroyed five German Panzer tanks!
During 1944-1945, 176 aircraft were lost and 81 pilots died in L-4 service. There were 78,665 hours flown during this period of time.
